  • The article is absolute trash for not mentioning this. "Their iconic keyboards..." is the closest it gets to describing them.

    Abstract

    A keyboard comprising a plurality of transparent keys. In use, the keyboard is attached to a device such as a mobile device, to overlie a display screen of the device. One or more images displayed on the display screen are made visible to a user through the keys, which may be pressed by a user. User input is determined by identifying a pressed key, and the image or part thereof visible through the key when pressed.

    Basically a detachable keyboard of transparent material as a display overlay, providing tactile feedback while the LCD allows for backlit and customizable key labels. I don't remember seeing a practical implementation of this IRL or in media but I might be too young for that.

  • More like in Jupiter. You wouldn't feel much of the gravity at first because you'd be in a freefall, sucked towards the center. The increasingly dense gas will cause huge drag on any protruding body parts, tearing you apart. Its temperature is -150 °C, and even less when taking windchill into account. As you sink, the gas turns fom a haze to dense fog to increasingly liquid-like. Eventually, the density will be the same as your remains (hard to tell what density precisely because they will be crushed by pressure) and the descent will stop. The solids making up your body will probably pulverize over time.

    If you're headed towards Jupiter, try to land on one of the four major moons instead. You'll only need to worry about the cold and the much smaller pressure difference.

  • Yes but still, his argument "MP3 is dead because you can quickly download whatever you got as MP3s in 2005 as lossless files now" is very inaccurate, whatever level of credibility he is aiming for. File sizes are still a concern, which is why YouTube audio streams start at 35 kb/s, and that uses OPUS - it gives pretty much the best-sounding results for low bitrates. If you however need the best quality for audio that was mastered for CD, 44.1kHz 16bit FLAC is the best container because it is a decently efficient way to represent it losslessly, and even though AAC or OPUS could fit barely-lossy 196kHz 24bit audio at the same bitrate, the recording would need to be interpolated for that. And yes, if an uncompressed 196kHz 24bit master then resurfaced, CD-quality FLAC would be worse at representing it than lossy 24bit OPUS at tge same bitrate. This means that modern recordings, which can be mastered at ludicrous specs, should still be distributed online (in say, Spotify Premium) in OPUS rather than lower-spec lossless because bitrate is still their ultimate bottleneck.

    Yes, the strive for lossless streaming that FLAC and higher bandwidths allowed for was a contributor to MP3's demise. However, the niche it once dominated (highest perceived quality to bitrate ratio) never died, it just got outdone by AAC and then OPUS, which now take the space it used to dominate.

Seeing articles that imply I am "at risk" of being queer does not help: I don't want to go through the phase of finding out and potentially having to tackle the choices and processes involved before I sort out my ADHD-like symptoms. Trans folk REALLY is brave to have picked the fight against all the social norms. Should I unsubscribe from 196 to hopefully reduce the temptation to find out? Yes, I'm a bit of a coward.

  • Lead acid is LITERALLY the oldest known rechargeable battery type so I am not surprised you can make them with ancient tools if you're also OK with 19th century "safety standards".

  • Do you know that LiFePO4 cells are the same price (in Europe), longer-lasting, lighter and safer than traction lead-acid ones? They pretty much have no disadvantages to lead-acid, and the need of a BMS (and heater if needing to charge below freezing or run below -4 °F/-20 °C) is no problem since those are a fraction of the cells' price. The only reason I see behind this move would be acute lithium shortage in China.
