  • Is life really as awful as politics and the Internet make it out to be?

  • It all depends on what kinds of privilege you have access to. If you’re a cishet (or at least bi and in a straight-passing relationship) white dude with a decent job, you’re probably doing just fine right now, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Barring some major catastrophe like war, there’s very little that politicians will do to disrupt the day-to-day lives of someone in that kind of demographic. It’s important to remember that “being able to disengage from politics because no policies will target you regardless of who is in power” is a form of privilege, and a rather large one at that.

  • My biggest complaint about videos is simply that the fediverse hasn’t figured out a decent video hosting solution yet. YouTube is an evil monolith, but at least their videos fucking load. It seems like every other video hosting solution that the fediverse tries either buffers endlessly or refuses to load entirely.

    Also, fuck catbox.moe, those links never fucking work for me. I’m convinced they have my VPN blocked, because every single catbox link is completely dead. If I’m blocked, at least tell me that instead of just sitting on an endless loading page with no fucking content.

    At least with something like Lemmy, the videos aren’t being served algorithmically. It’s communities I have subscribed to, rather than having some shadowy algorithm decide what it thinks will keep me engaged. That’s my big complaint with most modern video platforms, and Lemmy doesn’t do that because it’s content I have actively subscribed to.

    Plus, I greatly prefer this kind of comment platform, instead of whatever Instagram/Tiktok/YouTube/etc are doing. Having a video posted here means I can access it along with my preferred comment format.

    Glad they stuck to their guns. I’ve been following this case for a few years now. This all began as an attempt by eBay’s C-level executives to bully a few reporters into silence. It makes perfect sense that those reporters would refuse to accept an NDA as part of the settlement, because reporting on things like this is exactly what landed them on eBay’s radar in the first place.

  • Not-for-profit is still a corporation, and the distinction simply means that they need to reinvest profits back into the company. A for-profit company can sit on massive amounts of stockpiled wealth, while a not-for-profit needs to find ways to reinvest that back into the company. To be clear, they can still sit on a lot of money. But all of their money needs to be earmarked for something, instead of just being a rainy day fund.

  • And here’s a reminder that ERs in some states are required by law to ask about your immigration/citizenship status. The cruelty is always the point.

    Also, they’re not even requesting it be shared directly with the government. That apparently isn’t enough. They’re requiring that the personally identifiable information (names, addresses, diagnoses, etc) also be shared with an independent contractor. An independent contractor that these hospitals have no confidentiality agreements with, no privacy guarantees from, and no security audits to review. They’re being required to send all of their patents’ PII to this shadowy contractor, so that contractor can do throws hands up in the air and gestures around wildly with it.

  • Users choose not to update to avoid rebooting. The average user barely even knows what an OS is. They just know that if they reboot, they’ll lose their 347 Emotional Support Chrome tabs. Lemmy tends to be fairly tech literate, which means conversations about tech often involve the Average Familiarity problem:

  • Not sure if you’ve heard, but the medical world is slowly trying to transition to calling it PMOS now. Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome. Basically, research has concluded that the ovarian cysts are a symptom of much larger metabolic and insulin resistance issues. So they’re trying to move towards referring to it as an endocrine and metabolic issue, instead of an ovarian cyst issue.

    The fact that many doctors don’t tend to take women’s issues seriously is a factor in the name change. Language shapes how we view the world, and referring to it specifically as an issue with ovarian cysts has lots of doctors automatically dismissing it as whiny women complaining about their periods. But calling it an endocrine and metabolic issue is more accurate and may encourage some doctors to actually take the symptoms more seriously.

  • Isolating vocals on a messy track would actually be closer to audio forensics, which is a pretty specific branch of the audio world. There are lots of specialized tricks that audio forensics experts can use, which would fly in the face of a lot of what traditional audio engineers would consider best practice. Because an audio forensics expert isn’t thinking about best practice for a mixed and mastered track, which is the mindset that most audio engineers would approach the problem from.

  • I see. I think you can do that, but it will need to be done during the initial setup. You could also try FileBot for the initial file renames, if you can’t get the initial file discovery and setup working.

There are records of officials talking about it, and they outright state that it was started because they wanted to criminalize historically black behaviors. Because they could then use that to target black communities.

  • The best analogy I’ve seen is that shrooms is like a road trip. You’re gonna be on it for a while, but you can stop and take breaks to enjoy the scenery while you travel.

    Acid is like taking a flight. You’ll get there, but you basically just buckle up and wait for the ride to be over. You can wander around the cabin a little, but you’re basically just along for the ride.

  • Ah yeah, that’s because it will use the folder to store extra files as well, like subtitles, metadata, poster art, etc… Just dumping every media file into a single “Movies” library isn’t great, because you’ll have a ton of overlapping files. Separating them into their own folders allows you to store those extra files alongside the media.

  • It’s because the default wheels are made for rolling on office carpet. The super tight weave with zero pad underneath (usually using carpet tiles that can be easily replaced in the event of stains), which is the go-to for corporate settings. It sucks to roll on anything besides that, because the wheels aren’t designed for it.
