  • I wrote a memory scanner that can regex over a processes memory. Goal was to make it easy to find CTF flags in memory. Dunno how useful it is in reality, but it was a fun tangent.

  • Do any serious portable project with C and you'll see why. You'll either need to vendor in all the code you want to link against, or you'll constantly have compilation issues when the OS provided library differs (or doesn't exist at all) from the one you have on your dev box.

  • I'll taken your word for it, but if taskbar and start menu were controllable, I'm pretty sure after the third "I've deleted the internet/copilot/notes" support call I would be enforcing that the default taskbar items stay there.

    Some companies might be resisting copilot, but many are going all in on it.

  • Search engines work by building an index over all the sites on the internet. The index and the status of the sites aren't linked, the search engine basically has a cached view of the site.

    If the site goes down after it is indexed, DDG won't know about it until the next index.

  • Using money as a gate has some issues. If you don't scale the amount to the region, you effectively exclude that region. But if you do scale to the region, it encourages the spammers to simply setup their operations (either physically or virtually) in the cheapest region (physically also has the benefit of cheap labour).

    Requiring unique credit cards could mitigate that, but then there is PCI issues there, and its basically no different to requiring ID.

    Disagree. Pointing out flaws in a proposal is important, it raises awareness so that they can be resolved.

    True of all moderation systems, but is open to abuse. Removing content, even temporarily is good way to censor opinions, by hiding them until they fall off the "new" page. Moderation usually happens quite slowly if the mods arent terminally online. A jury system may exacerbate that if the jurors aren't available to respond in time.

    Penalising false reports also risks discouraging reports, and may actually just encourage "group think". And if accounts are easy to spin up, there is no real cost to abusing reports to hide content.

    I actually think the current systems are actually adequate. We have a moderators who can be replaced at any time by admins, which gives oversight, and we have the ability to simply move communities to other instances if that fails.

  • Had a quick look at your doc, and the juries idea does not sound good.

    • Moderation is not something loads of people want to do. Take a look at the list of unmoderated communities: https://programming.dev/u/Vacant - Forcing random users to be involved would likely annoy your users.
    • For certain types of reports, CSAM, gore, etc, you absolutely do not want to share that to random users. If your users are underage, it could be illegal to do that anyway, but sensitive users may not want to be exposed to triggering content.

    Maybe you make being in the jury opt-in, but if most don't opt in your back to regular old moderation by the few who have the stomach for it.

  • I'm getting AI slop and security theatre vibes. The cross-signed keys is especially pointless when both are owned by the same person physically. No one will steal just one, they'll steal both.

    And its impossible for an end user to verify that the packages are actually clean, there is way too much surface area for a compromised package to be slipped in.
