  • I didn't make it through the whole whole thing, but it's an interesting take, thanks for sharing rss bot! Central criticism seems to be that modern day technologists latch onto the Chosen one themes of LOTR and convince themselves that they're special and good and justified in worsening the world in their own special and good way. While discworld antagonists are generally those self-styled chosen ones. I buy that difference and agree, but I don't think LOTR made thiel an asshole sociopath - I think some people are just assholes and society rewards them too much for it. On the either hand maybe society would be better off not buying into chosen one mythology. How many people proclaimed Musk as a real life Tony Stark during his rise?

  • I'm American and the main reason I don't aim the same criticism towards other countries is that I'm American and don't know enough about them. Maybe some people are agitating for malign purposes, but how much does that matter to a responsible netizen? No one knows who anyone is - maybe idiot takes are made by idiots or bad actors, it doesn't change much. Lastly, one quote stuck with me after the last election season : " the reactionary is always right about what is wrong but almost always wrong about what would be right"

  • as others have said, "yes" most people have the misfit drawer. We always called it the "horrible drawer_ because ladles and can openers and things would often catch and make it hard to open. I say embrace it, everyone deserves love even if not everyone fits in perfectly

  • But she does work? In truth there are two classes: working class and owner class. Doctors, actors, pipe fitters, bus drivers, etc are workers. They are paid for what they do (and who they are). Landlords, investors, etc are owners. They get paid for what they have. Maybe she doesn't have to work and is out of touch, but I have more in common with her than I do with Peter Thiel

  • Dems and Reps are both corporatists (though you could argue Reps are moving towards some neo-feudalism) neither is willing to severely curtail the big money interests. I think you're right that people are genuinely hurting and anxious. People are also probably sexist and racist. Harris had a hell of a lot of disadvantages to overcome in the president's race and she didn't.

    Mostly though, reality doesn't matter anymore for probably a supermajority because people are so checked out. Just vibes - and the vibes are bad
