  • The standard is PCI-e, and it is interchangeable. This is the second dedicated video card you can get in a Framework laptop, and they can be swapped out with each other. The other video card is even an AMD Radeon.

  • Framework has been pretty consistent on upgradability. You can even put the newest MOBOs/CPUs in the oldest laptops since they kept the formfactor identical. They sell such mobos on their website.

  • Yeah, article said he had talked for months about hanging himself. Any human friend would have done their best to save him. Being proactive about making him feel better, working through his problems with him, and/or notifying his parents or a school teacher.

    Meanwhile the chat bot just encouraged him to seek help himself. Which isn't bad, but when someone is suicidal, particularly when they keep bringing it up, is clearly not enough.

    I feel really bad for anyone treating chatbots as friends. They are basically guaranteed to get screwed over by the bot. And furthermore, they aren't learning how to connect with humans, humans who might become a lifelong friend, or teach one the skills to befriend a future lifelong friend.

    Consider many apps are just webpages. You can go to the website directly from a browser and everything is happy.

    Obviously won't solve everything, but that covers most apps right there.

    It's amazing how cheap living is when you aren't trying to jam yourself into a city. People talk about how there is a bunch of vacant housing, well, middle of nowhere is where it is! And it's damn cheap.

    And now, with 5G and satellite internet both as solid internet sources, it is rare you will find a house that will prevent a work remote job.

  • Some ISPs will also let you switch to your own modem if you call them and set it up with them. Have done that for years with my ISP as they otherwise charge a rental fee for their modem that pays for a completely brand new modem after only 6 months.

  • AMD has very solid Linux drivers. I forgot which CPU it was recently, but AMD had to delay the release because the Windows drivers weren't ready, despite having Linux drivers already included in kernels.

  • A bunch of VR headsets (including fairly expensive ones) used Windows Mixed Reality as their API to the OS. Without it, many of these headsets simply do not function. Turning your very expensive purchase into a paperweight.

  • Not to mention there are plenty of games out there being given away for free. Civ VI (all DLCs included) was just given away a few weeks ago. Thing is good for hundreds of hours.

    Also, cooking your own food is way, way cheaper than paying others to cook it. And if you cook larger portions, it doesn't take much time to throw a meal you made yesterday into the microwave.

  • Quite a few states actually have systems like this. In which individuals can choose their power generator at will. It is nice as it increases competition and lets you tailor energy use to your wants.

    If you want 100% green, switch to a generator that does that. If your default utility gets too expensive, switch to a cheaper one, etc.

  • FedNow became a thing just two years ago. With transaction fees of just $0.043/transaction, it's cheaper than every other payment processor out there. Hopefully it can gain adoption and push out Visa/Mastercard.
