  • No, cars are designed to be easy to manufacture. Which makes them difficult to repair. As someone who has designed and built machines, you need to understand that there is a big difference between easy to manufacture and easy to repair.

  • Calibration is still a requirement even with the "automatic calibration" claimed on many new printers. I see so many new people having problems that could be solve with an actual physical check of the machine and adjusting software settings.

    So carry on! you've made a great start to actually learning how to print!

  • I did enjoy watching him drill a big hole in the back of the filter chamber and add another fan to actually draw the air though it. But yeah, at least Sanlanderer pointed out those poor to bad design choices in the machine.

    My biggest disappointment was in seeing the XY gantry being all glued together making it irreparable. It's a good thing I'm not in someone that would buy this printer anyway.

    A fetus develops and grows inside a placenta. Which is inside the uterus, which oddly enough, is inside a woman. No placenta, no baby. No baby, no placenta. So yes, to say your mother had you in inside her placenta is correct. It's just not how most people think about it.

  • There is one thing that people miss about that whole "10 acres to feed one cow" statement. Yep, it can take that much land. But what doesn't get said is that one cow can take advantage of land that is unsuitable to grow crops on like tomatoes, peppers, and onions.

    In the US, California produces more fresh produce every year than any other state can. But it comes at a high cost of farming land that really isn't naturally suitable for growing those vegetables. Farmers need to pump millions of gallons of water on those acres to get those crops to grow. This in turn puts pressure on the supply of water to everyone else in the state. And much of this farmland had all it could do to grow grass in some years originally.

    Aquifers are going starting to go dry because of this. The vast Ogilala aquifer that supplies water to almost all of the US west is starting to go dry. Because we now are farming land that probably be best left to growing grasses for cattle, sheep, or goats rather than tomatoes or soybeans.

  • You would harvest the leaves when they are small and young. And they would be one of the first fresh greens available in the spring. But their season quickly passes as the plants grow pretty fast.

  • I also have a Bambu Mini and it was a disappointing unboxing and setup. I think it took longer to get the machine registered and run the calibration than hooking up the AMS lite and plugging everything in.

    And Prusa's assembly instructions were the best I have ever seen. My Mk3s came with a large full color photographed and printed manual showing every step and assembly with a complete description. It was glorious.

  • When I bought my Mk3s kit during covid, I spent an entire weekend assembling it and I was sad when I finished it. I spent maybe 20 hours on the assembly because I didn't want the journey to end. I could have easily done it in 5 or 6 hours. Lots of breaks with cups of tea consumed, (and trips to the bathroom).

    But the world demands instant gratification, open the box, plug it in, and print your first benchy. But if you slow down, you might find the journey is as enjoyable as the destination.

    And if you bought an Ender 3 back in the day, perhaps the trip to printing was better than the destination.....

  • If we discount natural human curiosity, knowing how your efforts turned out can be very important to getting better at your job. If the only way you can know how it turned out is if someone yells at you for screwing up, that's a poor way to improve your skills.

    If you a designing a new UI for a program, it's good to know that the end user liked how you rounded that one icon, but the color pallet could be a bit brighter. It's how we improve and get better. To not know often leads to mediocrity because your attitude can quickly become "Eh, didn't get yelled at, good enough." How many bad bad UIs are out there?

    Same for me, knowing that how I treated a patient in something small could make a huge difference in their out come before we even got to the hospital. And not knowing how the outcome turned out slowed my personal development as a medic. It's not about being 'good enough' but doing the very best you can each time you get paged out. Because when someone calls for that ambulance, it's very often the worst day of their lives. And they are often pretty sure they might well die. At that point the last thing you want is a Good enough' attitude.

  • It's become all about purity testing. From both the right and the left. And since any purity test can be anything that anyone wants it be, everyone is guaranteed to fail it at some point. And because the internet never forgets, something you said 20 years ago now is grounds for being purged. Without any thought to what that person now believes and how they think.

  • I feel you. Certain professions have an emptiness to them because you don't know if what you do matters.

    I did about 15 years as a medic in a rural area. And while the saying is "You work on family and friends", I often had no clue if the people I scraped up and treated in the back of my bus lived or died. Once I dropped them at the ER, that was it. It was just a black hole that I could very rarely get a glimpse into. It left a real empty spot inside not knowing if what you did mattered.

    So, go home tonight, pour a whisk(e)y and do what I did-- pretend it does.

  • Buy the upgrade. It will make you much happier in the end.

  • The bearing is supposed to self center on the shaft with the fitment between the bearing and the shaft. I can't imagine the pain of trying to manually adjust those very tight tolerance parts for the perfect alignment. Far better to make the housing the bearing goes into correctly from the start.

  • Those are fine machines for the home shop! They should provide plenty of rigidity and accuracy for many years. And the prices aren't bad either. My machines are now smaller, I have a basic change gear lathe, 8x12 (203x305) lathe and a 7x21 (178x530) mill. I made a conscious decision to not work on anything I couldn't pickup and hold in one hand. ;)

    I've been known to make a model steam engine or two at times. I've even designed a couple of simple steam engines from scratch. But I haven't made one in a while. (I really should make one this winter) I've gotten more interested in doing more 3D printing, (I used to do a lot of design and prototyping as a toolmaker). I also occasionally make the odd part for antique farm machinery for old farmers that collect old tractors. I have repaired a lot of old bearing housings for them and even made some oddball bolts and nuts that you can't buy anymore. And on rare occasions, people bring me a shaft that needs a keyway repaired.

  • That's great! You are going to learn a lot about problem solving and how to think! What machine(s) do you have? I swapped out all the big industrial sized machines for a pair of benchtop sized lathe and mill. I decided when I retired that I wasn't going to ever machine anything that needed a piece of metal that I couldn't pickup and hold in my hand.

  • I have a few niche sites. Many of them are dying slowly because, well us denizens are dying one by one. And there is very few that will replace us. The times have changed. Few care about old steam engines anymore. And 3D printing has supplanted machining metal in home work shops. And 3D CAD has replaced the drafting board.
