  • First of all, it takes just as much labor to make a product that lasts fifty years as it does to make a product that lasts five years.

    While product obsolescence and built to expire is a huge problem, it is absolutely untrue to the point of absurdity to claim that making a product that lasts 50 years costs the same as a 5 year lifespan product.

    We don't even have the materials science to engineer an led diode that doesn't decrease in brightness over 50 years to be able to build one. You can beef up the components and heat sinks so they last 20, but the emitter will still be a fraction of its original brightness. The same goes for everything else.

  • Providing the basics is why I said taking the wealth and giving it to the poor would work.

    However "comfortable" is middle class, the majority of the US population, and that's not ecologically sustainable.

  • Money is a placeholder for labor. If you distribute all their money, the same labor needs to get done.

    It absolutely helps, but it can't make everyone rich because by definition "rich" requires living off the work of others. (I'm using the word rich losely to mean comfortable.) What it can do is raise the bottom 10% out of poverty.

    The US consumes at a level unsustainable by the Earth. Bezos's billions doesn't mean he consumes a billion cheeseburgers a day. His personal waste is huge but tiny when compared the the total of 350m Americans.

  • IPA does not remove oils, it solubilizes them and then they deposit back down again when it evaporates.

    You don't dump alcohol on the plate and then let it evaporate. You put it on a paper towel or microfiber cloth and rub the plate so the oils are transferred to the paper towel.

    Dish soap can be problematic because many brands include oils to be soft on hands. Palmolive is named because it has Palm oil in it. Dawn has Palm oil too

    For example, when I sold my business it was 2x annual revenue. That is I made $2M / year from repeat customers so got $4m.

    The only possible path to accountability is if Democrats take control of Presidency/House/Senate in 3.5 years. And even then I doubt anything will be done in the name of "healing the nation".

  • There are levels of support and none are inherently bad. It's up to the parents to raise the child right and the child to use the opportunities to reach greater heights than their parents.

    You would have been more prepared for problems had your parents dropped you off on the streets of a city when you were 15.

    My parents died when I was young. That gave me survival focus. Decades ago I had a coworker with similar childhood where his parents were teachers but his parents didn't die. His parents support allowed him to be more successful at a younger age than me.

    The entire premise of education is that you get to stand on the shoulders of giants instead of being thrown alone in a mud hut and figure out everything yourself.

    His son will be a Dentist. This isn't a child that is doing nothing with their life. Think of how much farther you could be in a career if you had more support. Instead of being an employee, you'd be the employer.

  • Yeah this is drinking straws vs private jets.

    Growing up in the suburbs we raked all the leaves and packed them in plastic bags which were then picked up as trash (no recycling back then). We had hundreds of fireflies everywhere.

    Today I'm on 3.5 acres, half of which I don't mow at all and the other half I don't rake the leaves. But there are still fewer fireflies than 40 years ago.
