The vast majority of counties/cities pay poll workers for their time, and some cities can pay very well depending on your role.
Your scope of work involves a scheduled pollworker training class, a 15 hour day on election day, using a laptop, assisting voters, checking drivers licenses, some light paperwork, setting up and tearing down booths and tables/chairs. It's a very easy job.
if you can get a PTO day, depending on the rules of your main workplace, you can get paid twice for one day! Great way to make extra money and help out with the electoral process too!
I'll be working as chairperson of my polling precinct. We follow the election laws set by the state which includes ejecting from the premises any person or persons interfering with the voting process. ICE can go fuck themselves.
Admittedly it's a bit hard to explain but they were going off on a global-warming-is-an-Al-Gore-Conspiracy rant. They have a zero sum mentality. Improving the earth "for nothing" is unacceptable because there's no tangible reward right now, only improvement that would happen generations down the road, long after they are dead.

For most states you are also paid for your time as a poll worker. Attend the training, follow directions, and you're good to go.
