  • An easy answer is pagers in hospitals. I know it's because they're simple RF technology, and work reliably in cinderblock buildings. But given how advanced so much of our medical equipment is, you'd think there would be a different system. Granted, that system would almost definitely need updates and have potential downtime/crashes, which you cannot afford in that kind of environment

  • While not the same as phone bills, still today electricity changes in cost depending on the time of day. Electricity costs less in the middle of the night. It makes sense to have higher cost during peak demand when charging by usage and there is an impractical bandwidth limit.

  • Why? It's been much easier for me

  • Where did you access it from? Was it a university? As far as I've learned, ARPAnet wasn't available in residential settings.

  • I am in the US, and I despise what's going on. So please do not take what I am about to say as a defense to what is happening here.

Things are pretty extreme right now, but they aren't as bad as the extreme left media is making it out to be. I find news articles posted on Lemmy are often sensationalized. There are 100% things we need to worry about, and things I myself am fighting (most everything the orange man does). But I do not think it is so bad you should cancel a big opportunity for yourself. Obviously things are happening to people, but most people are traveling to and from the US without any issues. You aren't going to hear reports about all the people who didn't have any issues while traveling.

I do not think there is reason to believe anything would happen to you. The right doesn't want you here, so they absolutely aren't going to keep you here as a prisoner. If they wanted you out, you would gladly leave on your own accord and cover all the expenses. They wouldn't spend more money making you leave if you don't want to be here anyway.

  • Can't relate. Life is way better when your brain works almost how it's supposed to

  • 7 racks? Wtf?

  • Yes, they used to, and still do, do next day delivery depending on the item and where you live. It is certainly not the norm. That forum post is also not the evidence you think it is.

Regardless, you said when Amazon started it was next day delivery. That is simply not true. Perhaps you were talking about when Amazon was first available in your area it had next day deliver, which would be fair, but it's not when it started.

  • Again, idk what you're talking about. You keep saying people are "sleeping" on these other companies. That generally means you think something is underappreciated, and you want them to get the credit they deserve. I don't think that's what you're saying here though, it seems like you're saying we aren't giving them enough negative attention.

I already said we don't like other mega-corps, and literally specified Walmart. This post simply is about Amazon. Otherwise, I would've posted this article instead https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Walmart

  • I see, I misunderstood your comment saying "I guess the experience of Ebay in the US is completely different from the experience of Ebay outside the US." was you saying your experience is from within the US. You didn't specify which one was your experience, nor did the person you replied to. I was thinking your experience was from within the US, and theirs was from outside the US.

  • My experience with eBay in the US is also, more often than not, with free shipping. I'm not sure what items you're looking at but there are tons of options with free shipping

  • Walmart is, unfortunately, not better.

  • Idk, Aliexpress has plenty of the nonsensical names still. At least on the product listing, often the name isn't bothered to be put on the product itself. However, for American's Trump is wanting to handicap the de minimis for China.

  • Idk what you're talking about, honestly. But I don't think anyone here is advocating you go from Amazon to another mega corp like Walmart or Target. But as far as problems with Amazon, take your pick: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Amazon

  • What are you talking about? Amazon started as an online book store in 1994. They were not doing next day delivery, that's for sure. Amazon had a big push for "Prime 2 day delivery" for a long time, but from my anecdotal experience it's more than often longer than two days. Sometimes they offer one or two day shipping, but it's not the norm.

  • And if anyone magically finds them, they'll dismiss it as a crazy conspiracy

  • Microsoft isn't mentioned in the text, but the 3rd citation is a reference to Microsoft: Microsoft to Launch Much Awaited Cloud Server Farm in Israel in 2021

Separately, I did a quick search: Revealed: Microsoft deepened ties with Israeli military to provide tech support during Gaza war

In recent years, documents show, Microsoft has also provided the Israeli military with large-scale access to OpenAI’s GPT-4 model – the engine behind ChatGPT – thanks to a partnership with the developer of the AI tools which recently changed its policies against working with military and intelligence clients.

  • Of course they're not sure. This is an internet forum. The account being gone must mean it was deleted. Honestly, she was probably getting so much bat shit crazy messages, she deleted it herself. That makes the most sense.

3rd citation is a reference to Micro

  • Reads more like playful jabbing rather than actually accusatory. People do it all the time, where you may stop doing a bad habit and people ask "Are you okay?" in a joking manner. It could go the other way, but that's not how I read it.
