I also may boost posts I make with alts, but I'm mainly here so that should be rare.

  • About subscribing to communities on Mastodon and the sort, I'd advise against that.

    Mastodon's main solution to communities since they don't have a native community feature are bots that boost anything posted to their respective communities, including any comments, making your feed a spam hell if you follow the community bot.

    Their other solution, and what I'd suggest instead, is to follow the hashtags equivalent to that community, usually what comes before the domain in the handle, e.g. #fediverse for fediverse@lemmy.world. When a post comes from a community, Mastodon adds a hashtag to it with that logic, and thankfully it doesn't for any subsequent comments to the given post.

  • Not familiar with the instance or the underlying software, Sharkey (other than being a fork of Misskey), but have you tried posting to communities and/or adding tags to your posts? Those can broaden your reach. And if Sharkey doesn't support communities natively, you should still be able to post to communities by mentioning the community but swapping the ! for an @, e.g. @fediverse@lemmy.world instead of !fediverse@lemmy.world. However, do mind the first paragraph of a microblog post sent to a community becomes the title for the community, so try writing something that could work as that instead of something potentially spammy even if normal for microblogs.

    Dunno how preview works on Lemmy, but on Mbin for me, Twitter previews work every once in a blue moon. Also Nhim doesn't seem to be on a platform whose previews tend to work.

  • Like I said, it's a perception of mine. But if total numbers are stagnated, it may be worth for people to try to bring others in, like by direct invite (do keep explanation when inviting simple though!), or by simply attaching your fediverse profile/profiles to your other social medias where possible.

  • I've been trying to help on that for a while. Boosting, commenting, posting/crossposting... At worse, I just like/dislike since I can use that to make Ublock Origin auto-hiding posts on instances whose software doesn't have native hiding. And I'd incentivize others to do so too, to ensure the network doesn't whither.

    But still, patiently being around for some 3 years now, my impression is that it's growing quite nicely and quite fast too. Even more so if compared to the competition which's been around for much longer. Iirc Reddit, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, for example, are some 20 y.o. already. Discord I find suspicious how fast it grew, but even then it's older than most fediverse softwares too afaik, the oldest ones to my knowledge (not counting retrofitting ActivityPub) being Mastodon and Lemmy circa 2016~2017.

    Still, having learned not to take things for granted, even if I don't find it barren, I'd again incentivize others that see potential in this network to keep helping it stay relevant.

  • The fediverse seems rather active though, specially if comparing to similarly niche communities on Reddit, Facebook, Discord, etc.

    Besides, the fediverse becoming the main platform would both mean the problems of other platforms are attracted here, and that we'd be making a new standard.

    Alas, the saving grace of the fediverse is that any group of instances and/or actors can either interact or not with each other if they so desire without compromising the whole network. Though that is bound to create feuds, it's still far better than the addiction-oriented walled gardens that are the major platforms of today, while this bilateralism allowing for instances to choose who they interact ensures a healthier growth.

  • It wouldn't - it should already.

    Why, you ask? Because these laws almost always appear to be first and foremost tools of surveillance and control, not for legitimate reasons, so everyone's in these laws' scopes. It's just easier to go for the bigger players first, or even the US companies as they need to respect the laws of countries they operate in by American law too.

    Flying under the radar can only delay the problem so much, so if it concerns you, or whomever else for that matter, do push against these laws, and understand people need to be as resilient as those pushing in favor of these laws.

  • Do you speak another language? The process is similar, repeat and try to improve, but understanding you may not get things right in the first, second or few dozen times.

    Imo, it'd be better to stick to using whichever instance you picked, and maybe using another instance, preferably with another software, to see what's about. Mastodon is what I'd suggest for minimal overlap with Lemmy. Later, you could check something like Mbin, Friendica or PieFed for a reason you may notice as you rotate between Lemmy and Mastodon.

  • Instances may have different focuses, e.g. ani.social being focused on anime, hexbear.net on communism, and lemmy.world being generalist.

    Instances may also use different software, like mine which uses Mbin, FediNSFW (successor of LemmyNSFW) using PieFed, Mastodon.Social using Mastodon, etc. And each software has a different focus in design and functions.

    An instance may also block communications with another, e.g. if a given instance is rampant with bots and scammers, the two involved instances are not aligned ideologically, and so on.

    Also on a small tangent, this "defederation", the process of blocking communications with another instance, is to be expected. Instances won't always align, and I'd be concerned if they always did. But if you're ever caught in the cross-fire, it's easy to mitigate, like with having an alternative account here or there, and/or by using RSS feeds for your followed communities and users as the fediverse is full of those (plus Lemmy and a few others have hardcoded links for searches so you could easily add a redirect script).

  • From what I could observe, getting an account banned bans the IP, and trying to log in on a banned IP bans the given account, making for what feels like a "plandemic", or at least a very poorly thought or overzealous anti-ban circumvention feature.

    Still, if the platform doesn't want you, no need to think twice, I guess, so welcome aboard!

    And about Instagram, there's Pixelfed which tries to be an alternative to it, if you'd be interested to explore around. There's also generally fediverse-compatible alternatives to most of the major services out there. Also Mbin and Friendica are very overarching if you'd wish to try them out too, having some degree of compatibility to most other types of posts from the fediverse (PieFed's also working on that though it may need some maturing).

  • "It's an alternative to {insert service here}, but if a feature of the platform, an administration, its userbase, etc., are a problem, you can easily find alternatives without abandoning the whole network. Do keep backups of your communities though!"

    Also would need to rewrite to not sound as technical, but features-wise, I'd recommend Mbin, Friendica or, once it matures more, PieFed, since all 3 are overarching, being able to access Reddit-like posts, Twitter-like posts, and those compatible with either.

  • I guess it's one way to induce community engagement. Though an idea, don't overpost if you do it yourself, first for the risk of being ignored, and second to not burn through ideas too quickly.

    Also, if you want ideas for filler community games, there's always some popping up at GOG's general forum.
