  • If it was widely known that outlook was the legitimate suffix, there's no need to worry about this. If SAG-AFTRA had their own instance then any actor's account username associated with it would carry the suffix chosen by SAG-AFTRA.

    TomHanks@sag-aftra.com for example.

    TomHanks@lemmy.ml would be instantly recognizable as illegitimate.

    This problem already exists in many different forms and is already managed well by the fact that celebrities' real usernames are well known and bullshit posts from accounts trying to fake them are easily caught just by looking at the user name. There are plenty of parody accounts on X with very similar username formats. Is that a major problem for X users? Not from what I've seen.

  • The fix for this is for the guilds and unions that represent these celebrities to spin up their own instances. The suffix of the username granting the legitimacy.

  • Y'know this guy seems intelligent enough to come up with this scheme, but not intelligent enough to keep a low profile. I honestly don't understand that.

    Personally, I'd do the math to pay myself a living wage with this so that my actual work salary is nothing but a cherry on top; manage it so it seems like hype is ebbing and flowing in a natural way. If you ever figure out a way to break the system like this, you should never act in a way that draws attention to yourself.

    For me personally, the experience is allowed to take a hit, hell even a major hit, if the browser respects me as a user. FF seems to be better on that front although I'll confess I use Vanadium on my phone. Its GrapheneOS' default browser.

  • Honestly, as a newbie to Linux I think the ratio of well documented processes vs. "draw the rest of the fucking owl" is too damn high.

    The rule seems to be that CLI familiarity is treated as though its self-evident. The exception is a ground-up documented process with no assumptions of end user knowledge.

    If that could be resolved I think it would make the Linux desktop much more appealing to wider demographics.

    That said, I'm proud to say that I've migrated my entire home studio over to linux and have not nuked my system yet. Yet... Fortunately I have backups set up.

  • Music taste. I'm a metal fan for the most part and I have my own project band that I release music under.

    People always ask about my music (which is very kind of them) but I never actually want to discuss it with people because literally no one gets it or has any idea of what I'm referring to. I don't even make weird music its just that 98% of people have no fucking clue what black metal is or what progressive/atmospheric means in that context. God forbid they ask me to put music on in the car or at a party. I deflect that as best as I can.

    People think I'm into FFDP or Slipknot or best case something like Spiritbox or Sleep Token (last two are okay actually) but what I actually want to talk about is how amazing Artificial Brain balances the brutality of death metal and slam stylings with the jangly dissonance of the avant-garde black metal scene a-la Deathspell Omega, or how Navene Koperweis manages to be ahead of his time in almost every project he touches or how The Contortionist released one of the greatest progressive albums (Language) of all time.

    My ADHD has me dumping massive tangents on people the minute it seems like they have any clue about anything under the dust on the upper crust of the scene. Makes it hard to connect with people because I hyperfocus on this shit so any time I talk about it, I go hard. I'm conscious of this issue hence my hesitation to open up about it.

    The worst is when someone finds out I play guitar. They always wanna hear some cowboy chord stuff and I just don't really know any. Music to me isn't a party trick and that's kinda what it feels like everyone wants out of me.

    I just try to avoid all of it.

  • I think the security is adequately managed by the need for a massive transmitter as well as the question "what is there to gain via a hostile takeover and re-programming the probe?"

    I bet there's actual security of some kind going on, but those two points seem like a massive hurdle to clear just to mess with a deep space probe.
