I have opinions. Some of them are terrible. For this I am sorry.

Don't DM me without permission please

  • I disagree that it's pointless. I think it may be beneficial to humanity (eventually) to establish whether or not there is an objective reality which we all experience.

  • The point that the cat was to prove it was a stupid discussion but ended up being the perfect model with which to explain the concept of superposition to people who don't understand it?

  • Never understood why folks used acrylic bongs, like, how do you clean it? I kinda figured they were meant as disposable party bongs.

  • My bad, I meant order, they're distant cousins in the Hymenoptera order.

  • Bees and ants are in the wasp family order.

If wasps go, so to does much of the biodiversity among pollinators.

Edit: specificity in language is important

  • C++

    Jump
  • LLMs are often python based, so they're not wrong per se, I just wouldn't consider them to be correct

  • What URLs is it not a client for? As far as I understand it will pull whatever data is presented by whatever URL. cURL doesn't really care about protocol being http, you can use it with FTP as well, and I haven't tested it yet but now that I'm curious I wanna see if it works for SMB

  • If you need screensharing capabilities, I recommend installing OBS to use it's desktop capture feature as a virtual camera. This is because screensharing features often don't work on Linux (this is a good thing for privacy reasons)

  • I'm not gonna be a dick about it, but you really shouldn't be asking AI (or at least not a language model, use a reasoning model) things like this and accepting what they say as fact.

The information these models have is out of date

The information these models give is inaccurate

You were taught how to research in school, do the math yourself instead of killing your critical thinking skills by letting an AI do the work for you.

  • You'll probably be fine unless you're using apple hardware or some weird ultraproprietary thing. An Ethernet to USB adapter will get you connected if you need to manually download your wifi drivers, but this is extremely unlikely in 2025.

  • cURL (pronounced curl) stands for client for URL. It transfers data from a url, which you can then do things with.

  • Sounds like an XHCI handoff issue, is your Bluetooth run over USB3.1 by any chance?

  • Friend did you just copyright your lemmy comment under creative Commons v4?

  • Source?

  • Don't knock samba!

Samba + mDNS makes cross platform network attached storage so easy my grandma could use it!

  • Every normie doesn't need to spin up an instance to hurt meta, just enough of them that migration becomes noticeable

  • I use an HTPC that happens to be powerful enough to be a gaming PC, I also have a media server facing the internet for use on the go.

Most of my pc use nowadays is for media consumption and analog to digital conversion for backups (VHS to HDD and eventually M-Disc for long term storage).

I do a bit of emulation, most of that is done with an ARM handheld PC but it's an SP form factor and I don't really think it counts. I do a bit of PS2 emulation as well on my HTPC but mostly just to verify good rips of my physical games which I have backed up.

  • If you understand linux it's only a small leap to understand selfhosting. If you understand selfhosting it's only a small jump to hosting your own Fediverse instances, thereby completely eliminating your dependency on the big social media giants.

    Anecdote for support:

In only two days I went from "I can use BASH and the GNU Coreutils for most of my daily tasks on my PC" to "I understand networking well enough, own a domain with several webapps, and have successfully gained independence from the tech giants regarding cloud storage."

In two days, with only the purchase of a domain for about $10US, I've saved myself $15/mo from spotify, and over $40 from all the video streaming apps by rolling out Jellyfin, as well as Regained ownership of my photos from Google by downloading everything as a zip and rehosting it on my selfhosted immich instance.

This stuff is genuinely not difficult, it's tedious for sure, and for an OSS noob it will take some time, certainly more than it took me.
