    Once you understand that you can see why people having solidarity with marginalized groups they don't belong to isn't virtue signaling, it's the only path forward.

  • Math classes never allowed calculators, not because they were some sort of unfair advantage, but because if you somehow became reliant on it, it would hamper your ability to learn how to solve the problem.

    I really don't get this logic. Calculators don't solve problems they do arithmetic and make it so you don't need to cry because you can't remember the fucking unit square and your masochist calc prof wants you to do trig operations without a calculator.

    If you are learning to solve expressions, then sure it makes sense to limit calculator use. I still hate it because I did poorly in math until we stopped using numbers all together and then I ✨ thrived ✨.

  • How do you control for things like never having written an in person exam before, panic from last minute change, etc? Learning to write tests is a skill, especially in university. I assume it was pen and paper? I write by hand quite a bit still, but I'm sure I would struggle. I don't think I form thoughts the way I used to. I mostly start typing the go back and rearrange it, etc.

    I don't object to in person exams but maybe the kindest approach is to do it from the start of the semester.

    I sometimes wonder if people forget how short youth is. I truly don't think they are lazy or dishonest. I think they have failed by so many adults in so many different ways. I can't imagine the mixed messages they are getting about how AI is going to do the things for us and it's going to make a lot of the old skills we have useless but then they have to learn the 'old' ways anyhow. If they are in their 20s they are absolutely looking to the older folks for confirmation on things they haven't experienced. I don't think we are doing a great job of explaining why the old skills are still needed.

    The cheating part feels like maybe there have been no consequences so they think it's not a big deal? Again, you can't just tell them "don't cheat" if there is no explaining why and you don't enforce it. I know online exams were a COVID thing but I'm honestly surprised we didn't transition back, with accommodations for people who need them. You can't just give them tests they can do with no proctor, and on a computer that can access AI and expect them to think you take this seriously.

    • Being less dependent on pleasing other people allowed me to rest better.
    • I can survive on less money because I have paid off student debt and have good benefits
    • Getting to know my partner more. Every day we are getting better at being partners.
    • A lot less FOMO. I know I will not enjoy going to a big party. I can enjoy a quiet evening without feeling regret.
    • My overall life experiences make it easier for me to pick up (some) new skills. I can see how what I learned about geometry helps me be a better potter.
    • I feel more comfortable letting things go because I have experience that it won't matter to me in a day or week. Do that a 1000+ times and it will stick 😅

  • I understand why this case was civil and not criminal so you don't need to explain that to me but I feel like in most situations civil liability is treated with way less seriousness than criminal guilt, because of the burden of proof being different.

    So in this case Trump being liable is proof of his crimes but for others people might say that we can't say they are guilty, only that they are liable because the higher burden of proof could not be met (or else there would be a criminal conviction).

    My point isn't that either man is innocent of the accusations but that people are treated differently depending on how people feel about them.

    Do individuals have platforms? They don't follow the platform of the party they belong to? If that's true why are they parties and why are there only two parties who are pitted against each other? Doesn't it just become about winning or losing and not about collectively administering a government and improving things for citizens?

  • VBNMW is just a social campaign to try to keep the party cohesive. The voters individually decide if they follow it.

    I understand no one is like, checking who people vote for but I keep seeing people blaming Trump and his policies on those who didn't vote, or who decided to vote for a 3rd party.

    Even in the case of something egregious, it's probably still better than the alternative though.

    I feel like I need an analogy here so we don't get caught up on specifics. Let's say one party wants to serve mushrooms for dinner and the other one promises no mushrooms, but there will be instant rice. Person A hates mushrooms but doesn't mind instant rice. They might think people who hate instant rice are over reacting. Person B hates both mushrooms and instant rice. They wonder why person A thinks they should just shut up and eat it instead of having spaghetti, which everyone loves. And someone decided you are only allowed to have two choices. How on earth can that be representative?

    Does the severity of what people are asked to accept just keep increasing over time?

  • I am doing a really bad job at making my point. Maybe I need to go back a few steps.

    I don't know why a political party would support a candidate if there was a possibility the party would have to decide how to handle a scandal.

    There is no perfect response to this. No matter what the response is, some voters will disagree. There will be arguments among party members which will take up space instead of organizing for the election.

    It's a distraction. I don't mean the accusations are a distraction. I mean not immediately dropping the candidate and telling him to handle this and come back next time is a distraction. They don't have to attack him or attach any comment about if they believe the accusations. They can just be like, "We decided that the candidate has some other matters to attend to and can't give his candidacy his full attention."

    The fact that this isn't the first scandal and they just kept going is so confusing to me. I don't know the timeline but I guess if they literally can't kick him out if the party that makes the above impossible. In that case "blue no matter who" makes even less sense to me.

But what if someone wins the primary but then is like sike actually I am going to eat a puppy every day for lunch. Who decides they went to far for "blue no matter who"?
