  • It was a joke. We have invented fission and fusion, but the reactors are still attached it to a Rankine Cycle.

    Also, the radius would be considerably larger than the sun. Perhaps not encapsulating The Earth, but that seems like a potential death sentence, if we built a Dyson Sphere rather than a Dyson Swarm

  • Not that I'm aware of. All our nuclear commercial power plants are just plain old nuclear energy boiling water. We're gonna use a damn Dyson Sphere to boil water......

    We have bombs that use a similar starting mechanism, but they aren't exactly useful energy production.

  • I'm pretty sure they aren't doing the design part of the research. A lot of the "new" designs that China has been testing recently, have been sitting on US and European shelves for decades, like since the late '60s and early '70s. There's just not really a way, in the West, to legally set up a test reactor. China can just ignore things like permits and zoning.

  • The way I understand it, is that Audi, Volvo, and VW have had the hardware in place for a few years. They are collecting real world data about how we drive before they allow the systems to be used at all. There are also legal issues with liability.

  • Basically they are targeting women, and trans people. Newly married women, and trans people would have ID that doesn't necessarily match either their birth certificate name, or their name recorded by the registrar of voters. Also, and this is the kicker, WE ALREADY HAVE THE LAWS THAT ARE NEEDED. They are fighting a made up issue that they made up.

    To add to all of that, ID is getting somewhat prohibitive in costs. Here in CA it costs me $30 to renew my ID, not driver's license, every 6 or 8 years. That's not a major issue to me, but I do know people that absolutely could not afford it. It is annoying, since I got my first ID in '96 and that one only cost me $5.

  • The other brands, such as Audi and VW, work much better than Tesla's system. Their LIDAR systems aren't blinded by fog, and rain the way the Tesla is. Someone recently tested an Audi with its system against a Tesla with its system. The Tesla failed either 3/5 or 4/5 tests. The Audi passed 3/5 or 4/5. Neither system is perfect, but the one that doesn't rely on just cameras is clearly superior.
