That there is no perfect defense. There is no protection. Being alive means being exposed; it's the nature of life to be hazardous—it's the stuff of living.

  • This is largely just an interesting piece of trivia, but also somewhat notable because servers generally don’t federate content from before they were founded. So the older servers will have local copies of posts and comments from the early days of Lemmy.

This seems like a somewhat sane default, but it would be good if instances had the options to get all of the older historical posts as well. I don't think it would make a big difference for say LW.

  • FWIW, I did not have a single book with DRM issues. That being said, I don't have too many "hot bestsellers" or something similar.

  • Try getting in touch with the admin of https://sopuli.xyz/. He is supposed to be from Finland.

I've seen that instance recommended for European users.

Good luck with your move! We need to get rid of American oligarch influence. They are corrupt, dishonest and lack humanity.

  • Will stuff that they don't accept any old email address. Did they offer other major service providers (MS, Apple) of only Google?

  • Kazaa!

  • Yeah, this is what I am refering to. Wasn't sure how to properly describe it. :)

  • I normally dislike "Fuck [X]" type posts, even if I agree with the sentiment, but I completed to make an exception.

    Fuck Elon "pedoguy" Musk!

It's too bad we can't send Elmo, his collaborators and sycophants right into the sun.

  • One of the tools. Some other options in this very helpful guide (especially if you don't have a pre-2024 Kindle ereader):

I can confirm Method 2A works. The actual conversion to epub is automated, but I did have to clean up the metadata for many of my books, but that's understandable.

  • I was able to export (you'll have to remove DRM via plugin) all of my Kindle ebooks into epub using "Method 2a" of this guide:

    https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=361503

It's can be a massive pain with some metadata issues, but at least it works.

I've been meaning to do this for years, but have always been too lazy.

  • You should run the common instance federation tool for your main communities.

  • Really need to give it a go.

I've been meaning to try Piefed for a while (heard some really interesting things about it).

  • I am really hoping they will provide at least 2 more years of updates for everyone (perhaps the EU can force them to).

  • A public forum (be it old school message boards, Reddit or Lemmy) is by definition not private. It's more about the policies of a given platform; whether you do allow algorithmic content targeting and other schemes to "drive engagement".

  • Add Elmo and pedoguy.

  • Agreed, moving away from American tech stuff is becoming a priority.

American oligarchs are no better than the oligarchs who work with putin or Xi. Perhaps even worse because they tend to be much more dishonest in their rhetoric (constant pompous rants about "changing the world for the better").

  • The one silver lining about the new US administration is that it has helped undermine some fundamental notions around American exceptionalism.

American oligarchs are not that different from oligarchs in other countries.

  • I've been searching for an alternative search engine. Found Searx to be subpar.

Was thinking about Kagi, but if they work with the russians, that's an immediate no go for me.
