  • Glad to see that this is top comment. We finally reached the point where it doesn't get more outrageous anymore. A mere lie? It's just more of the same.

(famous last words! Let's see what MAGA comes up with next)

It would be more of a headline if Trump spoke honestly for once.

Of course we still need to report & read. But meh, put it on the pile that we hopefully will need later.

  • No, we really don't.

  • The WSJ reports that Trump and Musk now speak around once a month mostly about AI and other global events, although Trump says the relationship will never be what it once was. Still, people around Trump say the president still dwells on their breakup, and that he has privately admitted that Musk’s attacks hurt him, while Musk has complained about Trump’s “ingratitude.”

Oh Jezebel, that is a wonderfully tearjerking summary.

"Don't miss the next episode of this Bromance Soap Opera!"

  • And that's the boringly short and obvious truth.

Sometimes I almost wish we had cleverer villains. Almost.

edit: ok the quid pro quo, esp. for Musk who is the money giver, deserves a few more words even though it's blindingly obvious, too.

  • So. I never watched SB because of similar sentiment. Until very recently.

At first I was: yep, that's why I never watched it.But the film actually gets better the longer it goes. Crazier, more unhinged, free flowing production. In the end I liked it because it's much more than MAD-style camp. Artistically honest. Almost Dada.

Phew, now I sound like the world's No. 1 SB fanboi. I'm not. I just felt triggered by "dick jokes" because that really doesn't do it justice.

  • Sheesh, leave that man alone.

It's so sad that they're still harping on this, and it's disgusting how they pile on him now that they have the power.

  • Won't this become an actionable promise once they win the midterms?

    (Yes I am that optimistic)

  • Meh.

Andon Labs (i.e. humans) eventually asked Luna (AI) to search her memory for its policies and assess whether the worker was still a good fit.

Every AI story turns out to be less of a sensation when scrutinized. It's still a machine, doing what it's prompted to do.

  • Still slow compared to MAGA

  • It does.

If not for the environmental impact which makes it an absolute no-no for the foreseeable future I might even agree with you except that my divided stance already starts one step earlier:

I think it’s an amazing technology

Maybe it was that 10 years ago but I find it hard to see it that way when people constantly state that they don't even know what's happening inside it (black box) and that whatever development has happened since then was heavily if not completely influenced by interests of power & money.

That said, there might be some models out there that have little or nothing to do with the mainstream development, and I recognize that, but I would not call them AI writ large - that's what Big Tech does as described above.

  • OK what is your stance towards AI? You always seem to be defending "it"

  • I've seen your other pro-AI comments, always trying to gaslight people who you think know less than you. That is your mistake.

  • Holy Luigi!

We need Climate Action. How to nip this in the bud before they even start building the power plant. And not burning, or blowing up. That's bad for the world.

  • More context:

It would also be in stark defiance of Amazon’s stated climate goals, which center on reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

That’s not lost on the tech giant. But as Amazon spokesperson Margaret Callahan told the NYT, the “world looks different now than when we co-founded the climate pledge.”

“We’re being transparent about the challenges, investing in innovation, and delivering measurable results,” Callahan continued. “Growth and sustainability don’t have to be in opposition — in fact, our results show they reinforce each other.”

    That is so cynical.

The USA and its legislation (10 year moratorium on all AI regulation) is what changed.

The world is continuously and slowly going in the same direction since they "pledged". Nothing has changed there.

  • Nono, I'm sticking to my statement. If you say they are chasing AGI you mean that they are willing to make decisions that will further that goal, not just further profits. And I do not believe that for one second. I also don't believe AGI is anywhere in the near or even medium future for us.

That said, they might say that they have such lofty goals.

  • Wait, it does not run on solar, even partially? JFC.

    edit: yep.

Amazon has confirmed its investment in a massive gas-burning power plant in Texas, meant to supply up to 7.65 gigawatts of energy to a planned data center in Pecos County. Should it come online as planned, the plant’s 35 turbines would be allowed to spew 33 million tons of CO2 a year, the NYT notes, which would easily make it the largest single fount of emissions in the country.

It would also be in stark defiance of Amazon’s stated climate goals, which center on reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

    🤦

Does greed know no end in this country?

  • all indicators are that these data centers are being built to keep up the breakneck pace of companies racing to create AGI

Amazon? Nah, it has commercial interest in this, not scientific*.

Also, MAGA is pushing this like crazy, and destroying the planet in the process. For the next 10 years there's by law practically no regulation wrt anything AI.

    That said:

keep up the breakneck pace of US-American companies racing to create AGI more AI, or ELLM = even larger language models

This affects the whole world, esp. if other governments (looking at EU) simply swallow the narrative hook line sinker.

    Fuck This Shit

If you say they are chasing AGI you mean that they are willing to make decisions that will further that goal, not just further profits. And I do not believe that for one second.
