  • I'd like to recommend Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow. As a novel or as a movie. I read it - and loved it - back then and re-watched the movie just a week ago.

It's about Greenland and Denmark, it's about crazy rich people, a country full of resources and the dangers lingering therein. It's about the exploitation of both the land and its people.

  • I just read something about this, and it jibes with my own thoughts on the topic:

“There is a shift in U.S. policy and in many ways it is permanent,” according to a senior official with a European government. “Waiting it out is not a solution.

    From this politico article

I mean, let's play out the possible scenarios for 2028... I don't see a single one that results in slowly rolling back everything that happened since 2016. And even back then the USA was not the most democratic; it was easier for Europe to not see it back then, but that is not the case anymore.

  • All of the above. With the weight of a whole nation's admin behind it. We are dooooo... nah I'm a glass half full kinda person.

  • almost cute

🤔 yeah, almost. A murderous clown is still foremost a murderer.

  • As much as I hate it:It's the "white mum vs. brown man" scenario. One murder of the former weighs more than 1000 murders of the latter.

  • What we are seeing as weak responses are actually just buying time in order to prepare

Hmm, a bit of both I'd say. But yeah, "The USA our friend and partner" has been a mantra for so long it's going to take some time to get away from that. OTOH there's many more aspects, like fear of far-right populist uprising when e.g. US social media aren't around anymore, prices rise even more...

  • “There is a shift in U.S. policy and in many ways it is permanent,” according to a senior official with a European government. “Waiting it out is not a solution. What needs to be done is an orderly and coordinated movement to a new reality.”

That coordination has already begun, as has the big conversation about what comes next.

National security advisers from 35 governments are in regular contact, meeting frequently online and in person, as well as interacting via less formal text messaging. They are accustomed to seeking multilateral solutions in a world where Trump is a big part of the problem.

Better late than never.Recognition is the first step towards change, I guess.

  • Apropos nothing:

In January, the above picture could've been taken almost anywhere in Scandinavia.

The Southernmost tip of Greenland is on a level with Oslo.Nuuk is on a level with any number of Scandinavian towns.Lateral distances are also not too far from Europe, e.g. the distance between Nuuk and Dublin is pretty much the same as the distance between Dublin and Bucharest.Greenland isn't that far out.

PS: I just compared the weather forecast for Nuuk and the place where I am right now (Southern Finland) and it's a wash. Next week it's even going to be warmer in Nuuk than here. Not much wind (chill) either.

  • I like the attention to detail: him biting his lower lip.

And I believe that detail betrays the whole "Roman Salute" bs - he knew exactly he was being a bad boy.

  • Gotta lovehate that picture. Apparently it's real:

BTW while Putin looks better here, physically, that does not mean that he is better than Trump in any way.

  • Blair and Rubio named on senior executive of Gaza 'Board of Peace'The former UK prime minister and US secretary of state will sit on the "founding executive board", the White House says

I don't get it. I suppose it's from 1984; what was minilove and how does it relate to the headline?

  • That's almlost 78bn rubels. You could send many soldiers to their death for that!

  • I think that's the idea. Also I heard that the joining fee is $1bn. He just can't stop grifting.

  • We're all just beta testers.

  • The use of litotes is common in English, Russian, German, Yiddish, Dutch, Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Ukrainian, Polish, Chinese, French, Czech and Slovak, and is prevalent in some other languages and dialects. It is a feature of Old English poetry and of the Icelandic sagas and is a means of much stoical restraint.

    So not ALL languages? TIL

  • I've been having the weirdest dreams recently, and of course I remember them all!

    • I found a door in a wall, hip height and small, and there was a toilet behind it. OK, I thought, I need to take a shit anyhow. Entered, lowered my pants, and sat down. But due to the small door I did not notice that this room has a second half, with a table and chairs, and my relatives sitting around it. Neither of us minded though, and I continued taking a shit. It was one of those really bad ones that make me use tons of toilet paper. Well, I finished at last and was overcome by endless enbarassment, like what about the smell etc.

    • I worked in a school as a substitute teacher and a fire broke out in an area I was responsible for. I did not notice immediately (bad). But one kid did. Instead of simply opening the door to where I was and telling me, he invented a morse machine out of a plastic tube and morsed SOS out the window. I did manage to extinguish the fire, and later all the parents and coworkers came and of course it was all my fault and the kid was the hero of the day.

Feeling super weird after these, but esp. the first one. I didn't even need to take a shit when I woke up. Like, wtf brain, that's not one of my major fears!

Thank you for coming to my dream talk.

  • sweary Aussie drama

I fast forwarded these. I also didn't like the airport security stuff.

But I like how e.g. they pun on their own age when having these team talks about their programme. Some bits in that section are really timely, and not just because they mention social media. Like one of the younger upstarts being uncomfortable because they aren't sure if what they just said was transphobic or not. That sort of stuff.

  • I used to have a static IP at home so I cold run my own physical server. I stuck it under the fridge because there were wall plugs and I didn't want it in my living room. Hence the name.

It used to serve NFS shares locally, websites and CalDAV/CardDAV globally. A dual-core-but-32-bit stone old intel processor, 2GB of RAM, and never a performance problem.
