  • Dust devil maybe? I’ve seen those several times, never strong enough to damage anything.

    I don’t know if this counts but I found a courtyard between buildings on Manhattan where there was always a swirl of wind at a specific spot from prevailing winds being funneled between buildings. A bunch of time I went back there I’d see a swirl of leaves and trash like a mini-tornado, always in the same spot

  • Yeah I think the timing was critical. She started campaigning way too late.

    I do think Biden did a good job and got a lot of things moving in the right direction. I also think too many of the things he started were too long term: “continue the same policies” was the best answer. However we as a country no longer have the patience, we need instanteous gratuity that was just not there. It’s somewhat like the Jimmy Carter problem: it doesn’t matter how smart you are or whether you’re doing the right thing if you can’t get everyone excited.

    Harris started off strong but really didn’t get anyone excited and “more of the same” was not the way to do it (even if she were right).

    She needed time and distance to better establish her as a distinct candidate.

    I even see Biden’s logic of “can’t let Trump win and no other candidates stand out” but it was the wrong approach. In hindsight, yes, dropping out much earlier was clearly the better choice

  • That is the problem, in hindsight, both Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris would have been better for the country than what we ended up with instead.

    Given who the current president is, we’re in an era where image matters far more than qualifications. People say they voted for the current president for reasons of image, even when it flies in the face of reality. Similarly the current president was very effective at name calling, and so confidently spewing nonsense that people fell for it. Trump’s biggest skill was always bullshitting and Harris was one of his victims.

  • Yeah, no. Two wrongs don’t make a right. I strongly support future presidents focusing their search for qualified candidates toward better equity, but Quotas and mandates are just doing the wrong thing in the other direction

    This is the whole dei misunderstanding all over again. Expanding opportunities for under represented demographics is not the same as blindly hiring under represented demographics

  • I do regret not being supportive of Hillary Clinton. I voted for her because of the alternative, but ……..

    Looking back from our current chaos and dystopia, Clinton’s main problem was she wasn’t personable. The reality is she would have been effective, and would have served the country far better than what we got instead.

  • My 401k is up, especially compared to the Trump crash in March but in general as well. Not enough to retire though. I still have a job but it’s looking precarious: lots of layoffs

  • It’s not just that, but yeah, some changes aren’t incentivized by quarterly profits. The Chinese government did help with planning and incentives to help manufacturers transition to new technology and to build out the supply chains they would need.

    Now they’ve made the transition to new technology, established supply chains, scaled up, and have strong competition to keep progressing rapidly.

    US government tried at various points, only to have progress thrown away by the next administration. So now we have protectionism. Consumers pay more while legacy manufacturers milk obsolete technology for a few more quarters of profit……. While losing any hope of competing globally

  • Probably not. It’s an Apple thing that comes with iCloud. iPhones aren’t very popular here but maybe someone else can recommend generic/Android/Windows/Linux equivalents

    This might even require a specific level of iCloud subscription, I don’t know, but I use

    • password generator, including family sharing and cross device sharing. I believe even cross device passkeys but I’ve never tried
    • “Hide my email” generates a unique forwarding email per site
    • “private relay” maps me to a general location not tied to my mobile vendor

    Whether through an app or web browser on any Apple or windows device, it autofills a login with unique generated email, unique generated password or passkey, and anyone trying to find my location through my connection will get a regional answer

    For example, my login here is a unique address not used anywhere else and not tied to me any other way.

  • You’re using very secure options for a few specific areas, but security is about being systematic and comprehensive. There’s a lot of complexity, so a lot of potential holes. You probably don’t need better security on the places you already make good choices, you need to find a way to cover more possibilities.

    If you’re talking about cloud accounts, there’s not much else you can do: it’s al up to the vendor.

    Minor possibility: I use unique generated email addresses/usernames, in addition to unique generated passwords or passkeys. There’s authentications are hard to guess, different at every site, intruders can’t even easily connect my accounts at different cloud vendors

  • Video camera and small claims court? At some point it turns into harassment or invasion of privacy. With a video (and a lot of luck) you may be able to establish who the pilot is and when the actions become intrusive
