  • Lemmy.world and piefed.social are two different instances (servers) run by different people. They also run different software (Lemmy and Piefed respectively) which speaks the same protocol and can talk to each other (and other instances as well).

    If you look at the same community e.g. !fediverse@lemmy.world under each instance the content should be the same: the protocol should ensure that. The interface, the way it is presented to you, might be different, mostly decided by the software (Lemmy or Piefed, or any reader client you use).

    It is also possible some posts or replies made it to one instance but not the other, perhaps due to technical problems, or policy (one instance’s admin might decide to not federate with another), but you should not encounter it very often (but it certainly happens).

    People choose one instance over another for different reasons. Perhaps they like one software’s interface better than another. Perhaps they feel one server is faster and more responsive than another. Perhaps they would like to subscribe to a community which is blocked by certain instances. Fortunately there is nothing to stop somebody from signing up at multiple instances, so one can just try each out and find out which one is suitable for them.

  • I'd like to use a aliexpress M.2 to RJ45 adapter on the Chromebook.

    Make sure it is of the right kind. M.2 Wi-Fi slots are key E, M.2 SSD slots are key M (mostly) and cards made for 1 kind does not fit the other.

    If the slot is for Wi-Fi it should have PCIe as that is what most Wi-Fi modules connect to. USB is used for Bluetooth mostly.

    Registered DIMMs can be unsoldered and the RAM chips reused in a pinch converting them to unbuffered DIMMs I suppose?

    But reports of manufacturing capacity being moved to HBM will not benefit consumers if the bubble bursts.

  • Technically no, it has to specifically have Dual-Mode support (DP++). In practice most of them do, at least in the consumer space.

    If it doesn't then you need an active adapter.

  • Agree with the other 2 replies that hammering the dyndns server every minute is excessive and you should only send them updates when your IP address actually changes.

    You should also check the TTL on the primary name server (the dyndns server) and the DNS server you use (likely your ISP's DNS server).

    The dyndns server probably has it configured right and it should have a low TTL like 5 minutes or below, but sometimes the DNS server you use can be a server that ignores TTL and caches the result for longer than expected. I don't think this is the problem if multiple of your friends are having the same problem but it doesn't hurt to check.
